Garlic + Parsley is a blend of garlic and parsley oils that are traditionally used to help maintain heart and upper respiratory tract health. Recent research demonstrates that garlic oil lowers lipid levels by inhibiting hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase and fatty acid synthetase, enzymes that mediate cholesterol and fatty acid synthesis, respectively.1 These inhibitory effects have been attributed to the high level of allyl sulfides in garlic oil, including diallyl sulfide, disulfide, and trisulfide.1 As diallyl trisulfide can increase the level of PPAR-α mRNA, which is responsible for fatty acid uptake and breakdown, garlic oil is more effective in decreasing triglycerides than other garlic preparations.1,2 In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 27 male runners, daily supplementation with garlic oil for four months significantly decreased triglyceride levels.3 Garlic also supports the cardiovascular system by stimulating the activity of glutathione and superoxide dismutase, which converts superoxide radicals into less damaging compounds.4 Garlic helps reduce the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections by supporting antibody production and by inhibiting the pro-inflammatory actions of the transcription factor NFκB.
