DHA liquid contains vegetable-sourced docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an essential omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid. While most DHA is obtained from fish oils, vegetable derived DHA is extracted from microalgae, the fish’s original food source, under tightly controlled food manufacturing conditions. DHA is well recognized for its ability to support neural and cognitive function as the building block of brain tissue. It is the primary structural fatty acid in the gray matter of the brain and retina of the eye, making it an essential nutrient for eye development, and for mental and visual function. Humans obtain DHA from their diets, initially through the placenta and from breast milk. Epidemiological studies indicate that a high intake of DHA is associated with healthy cognitive function in adults as well as infants born to mothers with a diet high in DHA. Clinical trials of supplementation with algae-derived DHA in healthy vegetarians have shown an increase in serum DHA levels.
