Genestra Herbolax

Short-term relief of occasional constipation
• Stimulant laxative
• Promotes bowel movement by direct action on the large intestine
• Includes a blend of Senna, Chinese Rhubarb, Anise, Fenugreek and Cascara Sagrada

Herbolax is an herbal combination that provides short-term relief of occasional constipation. It includes the stimulant laxative senna, which promotes bowel movement by direct action on the large intestine. Senna’s bioactive compounds, members of the anthraquinone family, work by regulating water reabsorption from the colon and colonic motility.1 Preclinical research suggests they decrease water reabsorption in the colon and promote electrolyte secretion into the colon to raise the fecal water content.1 By stimulating the myenteric plexus, an important nerve centre that coordinates peristalsis in the gastrointestinal tract, these compounds also increase intestinal motility.2 Collectively, these actions help produce soft stools and reduce transit time to ease bowel movements.2 In addition to providing senna, Herbolax offers other anthraquinone-containing herbs, including rhubarb and cascara, along with a blend of anise and fenugreek. Anise contains the bioactive compound anethole, while fenugreek seeds are known for their high content of mucilaginous fibre.

Recommended Adult Dose: Take four capsules daily before bedtime, a few hours before or after taking other medications or health products, or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner. Allow six to twelve hours for laxative effect to occur. Take two to three times per week. If results are not observed, the frequency of use may be increased up to once daily. Consult your healthcare practitioner for use beyond seven days.

Risk Information: Do not use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, allergic to plants of the Apiaceae/Carrot family, or have abnormal constrictions of the gastrointestinal tract, potential or existing intestinal blockage, atonic bowel, appendicitis, inflammatory colon diseases such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, abdominal pain of unknown origin, undiagnosed rectal bleeding or severe dehydration with depleted water or electrolytes. Consult your healthcare practitioner prior to use if you are taking thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice root or other medications or health products which may aggravate electrolyte imbalance, cardiac medications such as cardiac glycosides or antiarrhythmic medications, or have a kidney disorder, diabetes, faecal impaction or symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or fever. Reduce dose or discontinue use if you experience abdominal pain, cramps, spasms or diarrhoea. Consult your healthcare practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen. Hypersensitivity to senna and cascara sagrada is known to occur; in which case, discontinue use.
